Literature Text

It all began when Homo erectus set foot on the islands, followed by the Negritos.  Starting in the 900, history was being recorded for the first time.  Islam came to the country in the 12th century.  Finally, in 1521, Spain and a Portuguese explorer named Ferdinand Magellan left to sail the ocean blue.  They sailed to various places in the world, competing against England, France, and Belgium to stake their claim on new lands for resources and spread Christianity, and finding new countries such as Mexico, Cuba, and the Philippines.

Like her siblings, the Philippines was very defiant in being conquered and having to live in Spain’s house.  Even tough she was physically weak, the Philippines was a strong-willed girl, and the cruel-hearted Spain had set his eyes on her and wanted her as his own.
When Magellan first set foot on her beloved islands and tried to persuade her to join Spain, she had Lapu-Lapu kill him.  Despite Spain’s demands for Magellan’s body, the Philippines refused to do so.  Not even spoiling her with expensive trinkets worked.  Spain became very angry of her behavior and sent many more explorers to have her conquered as his territory.

Under Spain’s rule, he was constantly abusing the Philippines.  She was forced to give up her native customs for Spanish and Catholic ones, and the Spanish tongue became integrated with her own language.  Her older cousin Mexico would always tease her for not being Spanish enough, and would sometimes make her angry to the point that they would end up in a boxing match with each other.  Her former neighbors in Asia would always call her a traitor for leaving Asia to live in Spain’s house far away in Europe.  Yet the Philippines still tried to keep in touch with them, and try to show that she was still Asian just as much as they are by showing what customs she had learned from them when she was a newborn.  The Philippines never understood why she was sought after by various nations, but she used this as a self-explanation that she was special.

In 1761, France had Spain to sign a treaty known as the Family Pact to help him fight against England in the Seven Years War.

Nevertheless, Spain got into a little trouble with his European neighbors.  After swearing allegiance with his brother France, he prepared to attack England.  The English navy was too strong for Spain to handle, so in 1762, he gave up the Philippines to England.  But he swore that he would come back for her, whether she wanted him or not.

In 1763, England signed the Treaty of Paris, ending his war with France.

The Philippines was relieved to leave Spain’s house, but she was still upset with the fact that she was still stuck in Europe.  She also had to learn new customs, such as Protestantism, and a new language.  England was very polite and kind, but he was far too busy to pay any attention to her - he had other important issues with his other territories and colonies to deal with.  This left the Philippines alone, wishing that a handsome country other than Spain would take her away.
In 1764 a monsoon suddenly started, which made England have second thoughts about having the Philippines living in his house.  Thinking that she was cursed, England fled from the Philippines.  Spain saw this opportunity to seize her back as his territory once more, this time indefinitely.

Spain was even more cruel and abusive the second time around.  The American and French Revolutions were spreading ideas of heroism and freedom like an incurable cancer throughout the world, and Spain has been having difficulty keeping his occupants from revolting.  Mexico had already declared his independence from Spain, and Spain did not want to lose another colony from his house. However, because of the news of America and France’s independence from monarchy, the Philippines became more interested in learning about the world around her.
At first Spain was very reluctant to let her go to school, but each day he refused to let her go, she would threaten to declare her independence from him.  He finally allowed her to go to the best schools in Europe, hoping that she would use this knowledge to understand why he conquered the Philippines and her siblings in the first place.

But in 1895, the Cuban Revolution begins
The Philippine Revolution followed in the next year.

Spain tries to tighten his grip on the Philippines, but becomes distracted when America sent the USS Maine to Cuba to oversee the Cuban Revolution.  The Philippines breathes a deep sigh of relief, but quickly finds herself stuck in a fight between Spain and America after the USS Maine accidentally explodes.  As the two countries continue battle for her, she takes the opportunity to reclaim her land.

In 1898, the Spanish-American War begins.

But the Philippines encounters an unlikely suitor - Germany and a squadron await at her capital in Manila to take her away if America did not want her.  Before she could respond to his proposal, America sweeps the Philippines off her feet and carries her far away, promising her that she will never have to worry about being under Spain’s control ever again and that Germany will never lay a finger on her.

And in 1899 until 1913, after becoming a free republic from Spain by the United States of America, the Philippine-American War occurs.

The Philippines did not like America, at first.  He was the third country the Philippines was ruled by.  She was upset that he took away before she answered Germany’s proposal, she hated how he would refuse to join her in taking revenge on Spain for all the abuse she suffered, and threw tantrums just to be free like her older cousin Mexico.  America would just roughly pat her head, say how cute she looks when she is angry, and kiss her good-bye every time he left.
One day, the Philippines finally got fed up being treated like a pet - she punched America.  Surprised yet angry with her for breaking his eyeglasses, America slapped her down to the ground with all his strength.  But unlike Spain, America did not continue to abuse her after she fell.  He knelt down beside her and gave her a warm embrace.  He told her how much he really cherished her and how beautiful she was, calling her a gift from the gods.
“Because I love you so much, I am willing to set you free forever,” he even told her.  “But until then, I promise that I will return.”

</i>The Philippines transitions from being an American-governed territory into an independent commonwealth in 1933 after numerous acts had been passed.

However, a war was brewing in Europe that eventually spread around the globe, leaving no country untouched.
</i>

In one of her daily walks on her land while America was gone, the Philippines was captured by Japan, who wanted to create the ultimate Asian empire.  Japan knew that she was helpless and vulnerable without America, and America could not get back so easily after being attacked at Pearl Harbor.

In 1941, American forces surrendered to Japan at Bataan.
But America and General Douglas MacArthur made the Philippines a promise:
“We shall return.”

Japan was not used to having a female prisoner though.  He was not sure whether if he should treat her as one either.  Japan would beat her, only to stop in embarrassment and confusion, try be nice to the Philippines, but beat her again.  But the Philippines was not going to let herself be conquered by a foreigner once more.  She refused to accept what Japan gave her, no matter how beautiful and expensive his gifts were, which earned her a nickname: “Little Princess,” or “Hime.”  Despite her treatment, the Philippines was fascinated with Japan’s culture and absorbed whatever she could while under his occupation.  Japan did not mind her trying to imitate him, but he was still cruel to her.
Every night, the Philippines would cry herself to sleep.  She finally realized how much she missed America, how he would roughly pat her on the head and kiss her on the cheek whenever she was angry with him.  Out of all the countries that owned her, America was the only country who was truly kind to her, but now it seemed that he was never going to come back for her.

And in 1944, just as they promised, America and MacArthur returned and finally defeated the Japanese in 1945.

The Philippines was so overjoyed to see America.  But the war had changed America: he was now interested in saving the entire world from all its problems by being a hero.
“You’re free now.  Isn’t that what you always wanted?”

The Philippines becomes an independent republic from America on July 4, 1946.

The Philippines still clung to America, begging him to stay, afraid that she would be conquered again by another country.  Nevertheless, America was persistent in leaving her on her own.
“Didn’t I rescue you from the cruelty of Spain?  I kept Germany’s hands off before he could even touch you, right?  Also, I taught Japan not to be a bully anymore.  So if somebody tries to take you away, I’ll always be there to save you.  Remember - I’m a hero!”

</i>But in 1991, the Philippines declines a treaty that would allow America to extend the use of his military bases on her land.</i>

And from then on, the Philippines was left to struggle by herself.

~The End
I had to do a lot of research to get some of the dates, but I was surprised to learn that Britain briefly owned the Philippines. It was for only three years, so that’s probably why it‘s hardly ever mentioned in World History.

I knew Germany wanted the Philippines because he didn’t have any Asian territories (if I recall, he only had a small territory in East Africa - poor Germany).
He and the Philippines would have something in common though: long, difficult, hard-to-spell words. XD
And Germany would also probably get fat from eating her food - Filipino sausages are so yummy (Italy would of love her too - pancit, or Filipino noodles, would keep his pasta craving in check). XD

But Germany X Philippines was not meant to be - America was the hero and won the girl. XD

It would be cute to make a fan-manga using this story, but I don’t know…
I can’t get myself to get motivated to start and complete such projects. XD

Let me know what you think. :D
